In the Bike Lane: Spicing Up My Ride

We need our routines, but who can argue that variety is the spice of life? I’d like to talk about some methods you can employ to add new excitement to your riding.
Whenever there’s a story about spicing something up, whether it be your sex life, your career or working out, one of the first things mentioned is clothing. We are visually stimulated beings and when we see something appealing it can motivate us. Now I’m not saying you should go all Lady Gaga with your wardrobe (unless you want to), but now more than ever there are many fashionable, and functional cycling clothes available. For instance, I love wearing a skirt with a pair of cycling shorts when I ride. There’s something about the way the skirt flows and billows during the ride that makes me feel like a ballerina. When you get to work, shimmy out of the chamois, add stockings or leggings and you’re set for the day. You could even wear your heels if your commute is short enough. (I have a pair of hot pink heels that happen to match my Pinarello!)
There are lots of cool commuting clothes out there for men as well. There are cycling specific pants and shirts designed for guys that can transition from on the bike to off the bike. Picture this: A pair of black pants, a button down shirt in espresso and Dromarti Storica vintage cycling shoes shoes. Add a leather satchel and you’re lookin’ good. Although, adding a little spandex to the mix is good for give when riding, it doesn’t all have to be all about spandex anymore.
Next on my spicy list would be a changing up the route you take for your bike commute. In the winter months I usually go the shortest route because I just want to get there and out of the cold as quickly as possible, but now that it’s getting warmer I don’t mind taking the slower, less traveled, more scenic route. Sometimes I add a little extra mileage to wind down after a long day. After a stop at the local coffee shop for a latte, I arrive at work feeling refreshed.
Of course you can only do so much with your commute to work and back. Another way to break out of the routine is to perk up your recreational rides. Instead of riding alone, find a friend to spin with. Race each other to the top of a hill, ride through a park and stop to have a picnic lunch. I like making up games where the winner gets a predetermined reward—with the kids it could be ice cream, a toy or their favorite meal for dinner. With your main squeeze it could be…well, use your imagination!
